excellent scratching surface for cats, and it lasts much longer than carpet.
You can let the posts remain uncovered wood, or you can
wrap one or all of them with any combination of the following options:

Fully Carpeted Post

Full Sisal Rope Post

-- a strip of solid wood is wrapped with sisal carpet, and then attached to one side of a wood
or carpeted post.
